UCC graduate and former Students' Union President Eoin Hayes will be one of just a few lucky Irish people to attend the second inauguration of U.S. President Barack Obama.

Hayes, a UCC Engineering graduate and native of Limerick, worked as a paid employee at President Obama's Chicago campaign headquarters on the data team, which played an integral part in winning the election for Obama.

Hayes will be attending the Inauguration Ceremony at the Capitol Building on Monday 21 January 2013. He will also attend the official Inauguration Ball, and a week of events exclusively for former staff of the campaign. This will include a Staff Ball, which in 2009 was headlined by Jay-Z and Arcade Fire and attended by the President and the Vice-President of the United States.

“It was a real privilege to be part of the campaign,” says Hayes. “On a personal level, it was a dream come true.”

“What the team was able to achieve on the Obama campaign was really incredible. I had an opportunity to work with an assortment of technologists and politicos: world-class computer scientists and exceptional community organisers. Oftentimes I had to pinch myself. They were definitely the smartest group of people I ever worked with; I think this kind of technologically-focused, data-driven, grassroots campaign is more of what we’ll see in politics all over the world,” he added.

“I’m really excited about the celebration in DC,” Hayes continued, “It’s a wonderful time for the country and gives me great hope for the next four years.”

Hayes is a dual citizen of the US and Ireland and graduated from UCC in 2009 with a BEng in Process and Chemical Engineering, after which he served as the Students’ Union President for a one-year term. He recently completed a Master’s at London Business School and is now working in business development for a start-up in London.

Hayes will be tweeting about the events live from DC at @Eoin_Hayes.
