Katherine Condon, a Process and Chemical Engineering student in UCC, has been awarded the inaugural Joe Gantly Prize in Engineering. Mr. Gantly, who was a Civil Engineering graduate of Trinity College Dublin, made a significant contribution to industry and education in the Cork area.

Katherine Condon, a UCC Process and Chemical Engineering student from Ballinascarthy, West Cork has been awarded the Joe Gantly Prize in Engineering.

A prize fund kindly sponsored by the Cork Chamber of Commerce was established in memory of the late Joe Gantly, awarding a €1,500 sum each year to the best student(s) on the Work Placement module in the BE (Hons) programmes at UCC. This is the third time the award has been presented. Mr. Gantly, who was a Civil Engineering graduate of Trinity College Dublin, made a significant contribution to industry and education in the Cork area. He served as Director of European Operations at Apple Computers, President of Cork Chamber, Chairman of the Cork Airport Authority and as a Governor of UCC.

It is fitting that Katherine hails from Ballinacarthy given it was also the birthplace of both the grandfather and father of famous engineer Henry Ford.

A prize-giving event on Monday 18 November was organised and supported by the Work Placement team in the School of Engineering, including Dr Maria Sousa Gallagher, Dr John Hayes and Engineering Work Placement Manager, Linda Lynch. The students nominated from each of the four BE programmes this year were Laura Ryan BE (Energy Engineering), Katherine Condon BE (Process and Chemical Engineering), Alison O’Shea BE (Electrical and Electronic Engineering), and Niall Dennehy BE (Civil and Environmental Engineering).

Each student made a 15 minute presentation to the panel of judges, which comprised Conor Healy, CEO of Cork Chamber, Professor Patrick Fitzpatrick, Head of College, Science Engineering and Food Science and Professor Nabeel Riza, Head of School of Engineering.

Katherine Condon was supported at the event by her industry supervisors, David Tipping, CEO and Peter Marron, Engineering Manager of ClearSphere.
