2013 Press Releases

FUAIM at UCC

15 Oct 2013

Running until the sixth of December, FUAIM’s Autumn 2013 season brings together artists, scholars and audiences through concerts, seminars and music projects, celebrating the diversity and uniqueness of music at UCC.

Engaging with diverse communities of sound, FUAIM amplifies the University’s contribution to the rich cultural life of the city, region and country. All events are free and open to the general public.

The season began on Thursday the 26September, with a lecture from Ryan Minor, Associate Professor of Music at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Currently writing a book on the politics of spectatorship in German opera, Professor Minor’s lecture was entitled “The Mastersongs of Nuremberg, or: What Spooked Hans Sachs?”

All public lectures during the season will take place on Thursdays from 11am to 1pm in the Ó Riada Hall, Department of Music, Sunday’s Well Road.

The first concert this season took place on Friday the 27 September and featured Sean Ó Sé, one of Ireland’s best loved singers. Best known for his work with Seán Ó Riada and Ceoltoirí Chualann, Seán performed some of the songs he made famous with Ceoltoirí Chualann, as well as songs he learnt from his father.

The Department of Music and Theatre also presented a concert featuring internationally renowned singer, producer and composer, Iarla Ó Lionáird. Ó Lionáird is the first artist to be appointed to the position of Traditional Artist in Residence at University College Cork. He made his first public appearance in his new role at a lunchtime concert in the Aula Maxima on 4 October, accompanied by one of his long-time collaborators, the virtuoso guitarist, Steve Cooney.

Mel Mercier, Head of UCC’s School of Music and Theatre said: “We are delighted to present another season of FUAIM concerts and lectures. The Autumn season features a characteristically diverse programme of musical events, from classical chamber music to world music fusion, and Irish sean-nós singing to African imbube singing. As always, FUAIM lunchtime concerts are free and usually full to capacity, and we encourage audience members to arrive early to secure a seat!”
