8x8 takes global perspective

A still from ‘Which Way is the Front Line from Here?', which will be screened at the 8x8 Documentary Film Festival, 30 September - 4 October 2013 in UCC.

An exciting new documentary film festival that features a line-up of award winning documentaries from across the globe comes to UCC from the 30 September to 4 October.

The 8x8 Documentary Film Festival aims to raise awareness of global development issues amongst the student population in particular, and to challenge their perspectives and inspire them to take action for change. The festival is presented by charity Suas Educational Development in partnership with the UCC Suas Society and the Centre for Global Development, UCC.

Among the films being screened are Oscar nominees ‘Waste Land’ and ‘Five Broken Cameras’ as well as the fascinating ‘More Than Honey’ and the inspiring story of photojournalist Tim Hetherington in ‘Which Way is the Front Line from Here?’.

Throughout the festival there will be workshops, panel discussions and special guest appearances from UK-based director of ‘Town of Runners’, Jerry Rothwell and Irish director Emer Reynolds of the soon-to-be-released ‘Here Was Cuba’.

8x8 is part of Global Campus, a three-year initiative led by Suas that aims to get students more involved with development and taking action for change. Global Campus follows a national survey of third level students, conducted by Suas in 2012, which found that although 85% of students think it is important to take action on global development issues, only 20% felt confident in their ability to bring about change on these issues. Global Campus is funded by Irish Aid and EuropeAid.
