Since 1990, US firms have invested more capital here than Brazil, Russia, India, and China combined, according to a report on the Irish-US relationship.

UCC recently helped organise a Business Panel Discussion that focused on the Irish-US economic relationship, the scale of US foreign direct investment in Ireland, and the challenges and opportunities facing Irish businesses in the US. The event took place in the Council Chambers in Cork County Hall and was organised by the Ireland United States Alumni Association (IUSA), with the support of the US Embassy, University College Cork, Cork City Council, Cork County Council, and IBEC. It was attended by a wide range of individuals from the business community and was chaired by Dr Michael Murphy, President of UCC.

Mr Brian Cotter presented the findings of a recent report into the Irish-US economic relationship commissioned by the American Chamber of Commerce Ireland. One statistic that stands out from this report is that US firms have invested more capital in Ireland since 1990 (some $189 billion on a cumulative basis) than Brazil, Russia, India, and China combined ($159 billion).

Presentations were also given by Dr Stephen Anderson, the Commercial Counsellor at the US Embassy and Mr Kevin O’Leary, CEO, Qumas, who spoke from the perspective of an Irish company investing in the US. Mr Brendan Keane, Regional President, IBEC & General Manager, FMC Cork, took the contrary perspective of a US company investing in Ireland. The meeting was also addressed by Cllr Tim Lombard, Mayor, Cork County Council.
