The UCC LGBT (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender) Society has much to celebrate, having been awarded Best Society in the Country,

at the recent National Board of Irish College Societies Awards, held in Enfield, Co Meath last week. This is the highest accolade in the Societies calendar and the LGBT members were visibly delighted with their achievement.

Fighting off stiff competition from several other third level institutions including Trinity College and Queens University, UCCLGBT clearly impressed the adjudicating panel with the volume of activities and depth of campaigns which they took organised and took part in over the academic year.

Speaking after the announcement, Annie Hoey, UCCLGBT Auditor said "we are absolutely delighted to have won such a prestigious award. We believe this shows that LGBT rights are making a move forward in Ireland and that finally our voices are being heard. We are so honoured to be recognised for all the hard work we have put in over the last year and simply cannot thank everyone enough - from all on the committee and involved to the society, to our Allies who have supported us all year- you have all played a part in our success"

David O’Leary, UCC Societies Officer congratulated Annie and all the society members adding “In all, a total of 6 UCC societies made the national shortlist in various categories including Best Event, Most Improved Society and Best web presence. It’s fantastic to be a part of Student Societies in UCC, the work and the commitment which each society member contributes is remarkable and to have this recognised on a national level makes it even more worthwhile.  I would like to congratulate each and every member who made it to the National finals and it goes without saying that we are delighted that UCCLGBT have been awarded Best Society in Ireland, well done to all.”

BICS is a national organisation, constituted in 1995, dedicated to providing a national forum for the societies in Ireland's Universities, Colleges and Institutes of Education. The Board is responsible for the promotion of interest in the activities of Irish college societies and of contact and co-operation between them.

During the course of the past eleven years, the Board has met many of its objectives, in particular the exchange of information, and most successfully, the inauguration of the National Society of the Year Awards.
