Professor John A Murphy, UCC delivered a lecture on the former UCC President, Professor Alfred O’Rahilly in Listowel, Co Kerry, birthplace of O’Rahilly.

The lecture was  entitled ‘A Great Kerry Academic & Public Man:  President Alfred O’Rahilly, UCC.  Professor O’Rahilly  was a dominant figure in the University for almost four decades.  He was Professor of Mathematical Physics in 1914 and also had a vast range of scholarly interests – politics, sociology, finance, Christology, mathematical physics and history. He was appointed College Registrar in 1920 and was subsequently College President from 1943 to 1954.  Professor John A Murphy describes O’Rahilly as a controversial figure, yet he is considered one of the most vibrant and effective Presidents in the history of the National University.

UCC graduate, Dr Denis Brosnan, Founder of Kerry Group Plc also reflected on his time at UCC.  Denis Brosnan was conferred with an Honorary Doctorate from UCC in 1999 for a distinguished career in building-up Kerry Group as a leading food ingredients supplier.

Over 150 graduates and friends from County Kerry attended the UCC Lecture in St John’s Theatre, Listowel this week to celebrate UCC’s close connections with County Kerry.  The lecture was attended by Dr Michael Murphy, UCC President and guest of honour, Mr Jimmy Deenihan TD, Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht.
