UCC Engineering graduate, Peter Duffy, has been announced Student of the Year by Marketing Network in Dublin. In the past, recipients have generally been graduates of business degrees.

Peter, who will shortly launch a new startup company, is among the first batch of graduates of UCC’s new degree in Energy Engineering. He was helped in the early stages of formulating his winning idea by Shane McCarthy, also a graduate of Energy Engineering, and Mark Moriarty, a graduate of Physics at UCC.

Explaining the rationale behind his successful pitch, Peter says, “It was a combination of a strategy to integrate creative internet banking features with social media, an examination of the use of social media by banks and my own business idea that really won the judges over.”

The judges were all market industry leaders, including Dragons’ Den Bobby Kerr, Chairman of Insomnia and host of Down to Business on Newstalk Radio.

Dr Brian Ó Gallachóir, Lecturer in Energy Engineering at the School of Engineering, UCC, supervised Peter’s final year project. He was not surprised at Peter’s success, saying, “Peter clearly demonstrated that his abilities stretched beyond the areas we pointed him towards. In his project that focused on future energy scenarios for Ireland, Peter and his project partner set up a website, generated an interactive energy mapping tool and an innovative presentation format.”

With a UCC undergraduate degree under his belt, Peter will now be devoting all of his energies to the launch of MySales.ie. The site will enable businesses to promote their sales and discounts by easily connecting with customers through the website, across a number of social media platforms and directly by email contact.
