UCC is hosting the second Young Microbiologists Symposium on Microbe Signalling, Organisation and Pathogenesis on June 21st - 22nd.

This two-day international conference is intended to bring together graduate students, postdoctoral researchers and young principal investigators from leading laboratories around the world to discuss their current research.

The event is organised by Dr Robert Ryan (UCC) and Dr Delphine Caly (UCC) and funded under the Science Foundation Ireland Conferences and Workshops programme.

The Young Microbiologists Symposium aims to provide a platform for junior scientists to present their work and receive constructive feedback, to network with other students, postdoctoral researchers or young principal investigators in the field, and hopefully to facilitate future collaborations. There are four major sessions covering the following highly topical areas of prokaryotic molecular microbiology:

Each of these sessions is chaired by distinguished academics from around Europe with the main core of the talks given by young researchers from leading laboratories worldwide.

The conference has two keynote lectures that will be delivered by eminent scientists. The EMBO lecture will be given by Professor Judy Armitage (University of Oxford) titled ““Rotary motors, protein dynamics and bacterial behaviour” followed by the ASM lecture by Professor Thomas Silhavy (Princeton University) titled “Divide and Conquer: Genetic dissection of the beta-barrel assembly machine”.

During the conference, senior delegates will adjudicate on the short student talks and posters. Prizes for these are sponsored by the Journals - Biochemical Journal, Nature Reviews Microbiology, Trends in Microbiology and Molecular Microbiology.

The Conference takes place Brookfield Health Sciences Complex in UCC. See http://www.ucc.ie/yms2012 for more details.
