Plans for €14m Beaufort Laboratory unveiled
22.02.2012

Mr Pat Rabbitte TD, Minister for Communications, Energy & Natural Resources visited the National Maritime College of Ireland (NMCI) on Monday, February 20th 2012. Minister Rabbitte was met by the Flag Officer Commanding Naval Service, Commodore Mark Mellett and inspected the Guard of Honour from the Naval Service. The Minister was then briefed about the Irish Maritime Energy Resource Cluster (IMERC) Strategy and presented with an outline on the impact of UCC's Beaufort Laboratory.

The Minister marked the recent success of the IMERC Partners (Irish Naval Service and UCC) with a certificate presentation on being the first Naval Service worldwide and the first University worldwide to achieve the ISO 5001 standard in Energy Management.

UCC became the university worldwide to achieve the ISO 50001 standard in energy management and also the first public sector body in Ireland to be certified to the international standard. Enerit ISO 50001 software was used to implement UCC’s energy management programme and the University was certified to the standard in the space of just four months.

Director of Buildings and Estates at UCC, Mark Poland said: “UCC is committed to continuous energy performance improvement to enhance the environment of the university community of some 2,740 staff and almost 20,000 students”. Mr Poland said that the university has a long track record in energy management and has been particularly successful in winning grant support from the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) to support energy saving initiatives. “UCC currently has projects involving lighting, metering, heat recovery, ventilation, photovoltaics and wind energy etc. under way across the campus”, he said.

The ISO 50001achievement to UCC follows on the award of the world’s first Green Campus Flag for third level institutions by An Taisce and the FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education) in 2010 and, more recently, 4th position in the UI World Green Metric University Rankings where UCC beat off stiff opposition from 178 universities worldwide.
