To mark UCC’s award of The Sunday Times Irish University of the Year 2011-2012 and also being the only Irish university to achieve the unique status of Ireland’s five-star university, UCC President, Dr Michael Murphy received the January Cork Person of the Month.

Dr Murphy in praising the staff in UCC said, that this is testimony to the sustained culture of academic excellence that exists at the university. Alistair McCall, Editor of The Sunday Times University Guide 2012 said, “UCC combines high levels of student satisfaction, a strong research profile and a good graduate employment record with an outstanding student experience”.

As Ireland’s first five-star university, UCC is now positioned in the top two per cent of universities in the world. “The rise in our world ranking is a credit to the whole UCC community. It takes dedication on the part of the entire staff to ensure that the university continues to enjoy such a high international profile, one consistent with the standards we set for ourselves and with our ambition always to excel”, said Dr Michael Murphy.

“International recognition is very important for our local university here in Cork because it is a way to connect this whole region to the rest of the globe” said awards organiser Manus O’Callaghan.
