Oscar-nominated screenwriter and director, Kirsten Sheridan, will be in UCC on Thursday 15 November to participate in an open evening for the new BA in Film and Screen Media.

Led by internationally recognised experts, the new BA in Film and Screen Media (launching September 2013) is a pioneering programme that offers students a comprehensive education in the history, aesthetics and practice of the moving image, from early cinema to the digital age. The programme is unique in Ireland in its combination of film studies and screen media (internet, mobile social media, computer games).

Sheridan (Disco Pigs, In America, August Rush) will discuss her experiences at the open evening as a writer/director in the film industry in Ireland and Hollywood.

Speaking ahead of the open evening, Lord David Puttnam, film producer and Adjunct Professor of Film Studies and Digital Humanities at UCC, says: "The film business has been transformed by digital technology - and there's much more change to come. Any film studies course worth its salt needs to examine the opportunities and challenges presented by digital and to analyse their long-term consequences for the film industry, film culture and audiences. This is exactly what UCC's new BA in Film and Screen Media will do.”

The BA will offer practical modules and workshops in digital filmmaking and writing for the screen, and students will have the chance to work closely with resident filmmakers and screenwriters.  Leading figures from both Ireland and further afield will present guest lectures on filmmaking, film producing, screenwriting, acting, film history, and the marketing of films. The BA will continue the strong record that Film Studies at UCC holds in attracting notable speakers, having in the past welcomed Oscar-winning cinematographer, Jack Cardiff OBE, Oscar-winning producer, Lord David Puttnam, Oscar-winning historian and filmmaker, Kevin Brownlow, Oscar-nominated actress Betsy Blair, and multi-award winning director Lenny Abrahamson.

The BA in Film and Screen Media open evening takes place on Thursday 15 November at 6pm in Boole Lecture Theatre 4.

Members of the audience will be able to continue their silver screen experience after the open evening by attending Kirsten’s latest offering, Dollhouse. The screening will take place at the Cork Film Festival at 9pm that evening (venue: Gate cinema, advanced ticket purchase recommended).
