Professor Brendan Buckley will act as Interim Director of the Cork Cancer Research Centre, following the death of Professor Gerry O Sullivan.

Professor Buckley, a native of Cork, is currently Honorary Clinical Professor at The School of Medicine & Health at University College Cork, Consultant Physician at Bon Secours Hospital (Cork) and Consultant Chemical Pathologist at Mercy University Hospitals (Cork), amongst other roles in the medical field.

Commenting on Professor Buckley’s appointment, Dr Declan Farrell, Chairman of the Board of Directors at Cork Cancer Research Centre, said, "Having Professor Brendan Buckley on board at this crucial time for the Centre is indeed a welcome development. He has served on the Board of Cork Cancer Research for many years and we are most appreciative that he has agreed to see us through this important period for the Centre’s work as we prepare to appoint a full-time Director to run the Centre."

Commenting on his new role, Professor Buckley said, "I am honoured to be involved with Cork Cancer Research Centre. Professor Gerry O’ Sullivan was an inspiration to his peers, a strong leader to the Centre, and a pioneer in the field of cancer research and I am delighted to assist his team during this important interim period until a new Director is appointed. I am fully supportive of their excellent work to date and have a strong belief in their vision for the future."

Cork Cancer Research Centre investigates major issues in the genesis and secondary spread of cancer, in order to develop effective strategies for cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Researchers at the Centre work with multiple teaching hospitals and research institutes inIreland and in theUnited States, leading already to five clinical trials for new cancer treatments.

To preserve and honour the memory of the late Professor Gerry O’Sullivan, and to mark his contribution to the research and treatment of cancer, a new memorial fund has been set up in his name. The Professor Gerald O’Sullivan Memorial Fund will finance the immediate creation of two fellowships for personnel at the Cork Cancer Research Centre and contribute to its efforts to develop new treatments aimed at treating poor prognosis cancers and micro-metastatic disease.
