The Environmental Law Group at University College Cork has been hosting the Law and the Environment 2012 conference on campus today.

This is the 10th annual conference and builds on the success of previous events, with more than one hundred and fifty people attending to hear from a range of expert speakers. This event caters to a cross-section of professional actors, including the legal professions, regulators and policy-makers, environmental NGOs, local authorities, industry, and environmental consultants and service providers, and provides an opportunity for the dissemination of information on the latest legislative and judicial developments, research results and evolving best practice in the area of Environmental Law, Policy and Regulation. It also provides a truly unique forum for the practical and informal exchange of ideas and views on this rapidly developing area among key figures and stakeholders on all sides of the environmental protection debate.

In line with recent events, this year’s programme includes a number of specialist sessions covering such areas as Nature Conservation / Biodiversity Protection and Environmental Compliance and Enforcement, as well as open forum discussions on The Development and Role of Irish ENGOs and the government’s recently announced Roadmap for Climate Policy and Legislation. In total, participants can expect to hear from 20-25 expert speakers.

The Environmental Law Group based within the Faculty of Law at UCC is involved in leading-edge research in all aspects of Environmental Law and Regulation and is fast becoming a recognised centre of excellence in this area, both nationally and internationally. In addition, it plays a key role in developing understanding of environmental issues in Ireland by providing a national forum which brings together legal practitioners, regulators, policy-makers, environmental NGOs and business interest groups, senior managers from industry and the utilities, as well as academics, with an interest in Environmental Law and Policy.
