The first four graduates of the Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) in Business Economics were conferred at UCC recently.

This flagship programme allows business executives and managers to reflect on their professional lives to bring about transformational change in their ways of thinking and working.

Owen O’Brien, a serial entrepreneur, and a member of the inaugural class, says:  “Looking at my professional life through the various lenses provided in the DBA has had a fundamental influence on the way I understood both myself and business in general”.

This pioneering practitioner doctorate is unique not only in Ireland, but also internationally. Professor Robert Kegan of Harvard University Graduate School of Education, and external advisor to the programme, says: "UCC's Economics DBA (Business Economics) is professional education at its very best - intellectually rigorous, and personally transformative. There are many programmes today that bring Economics and Psychology together, but UCC's brand, drawing on developmental psychology (at the individual and organisational levels) and linking the meaning-making activities of Self and Science for the highest degree of business effectiveness, is truly distinctive”.

Professor Connell Fanning, Head of the School of Economics at UCC comments: “We are very proud of what we have done in the School of Economics in UCC in developing and delivering this programme over the last 5 years”.

Programme Director, Dr Eleanor Doyle, adds: “We have noticed some leading American universities taking ideas from our DBA and implementing them”.

The DBA programme will appeal to professionals, business people or managers with experience of the corporate world. Participants enrolled in the 2012/2013 programme are from diverse backgrounds, including: a banker, business owners, a publisher, an engineer, a consultant anaesthetist, a HR manager, an occupational psychologist, a non-profit CEO, an accountant and a property developer.
