The first bi-annual Doctor of Social Science Symposium was held in UCC recently. The Doctor of Social Science (DSocSc) is a four-year doctoral programme

...which provides the opportunity for experienced social professionals based in public sector agencies, community/voluntary organisations, and international non-government organisations to work on complex issues that are of direct relevance to their professional practice and organisation contexts.

As an alternative to the traditional research base PhD, the DSocSc provides a more structured learning environment that combines both teaching and research. The DSocSc provides taught modules on social research from design to dissemination. In the symposium, a number of the twenty-four DSocSc participants presented material on their research and Professor Brid Featherstone of the Open University, UK, discussed academic and professional publishing.
