A public talk entitled “Gender equality, African women and real empowerment” will be given by Ambassador of Kenya to Ireland, H.E. Catherine Muigai Mwangi, on Thursday 4 October in UCC.

The talk, which forms part of the Global Challenges Lecture Series, organised by UCC’s Centre for Global Development, will discuss the possibility that the clamour for gender equality may have cost African women real empowerment and the experience of meaningful change.

The talk will focus on empowerment that enables women to access and control the means of economic production and associated benefits in a manner that gives women social and political powers to influence their own lives as well as the lives of those around them.

The first resident Ambassador of Kenya to Ireland, HE Mwangi has been based in Dublin since 2007 and is currently Dean of the African Ambassadors resident in Ireland. Prior to becoming Ambassador, she worked for over 25 years in various local and international organizations in Kenya, providing high level professional services in strategic management and marketing.

She has played a critical role in promoting trade between African countries and Ireland as a way of ensuring a sustainable development agenda.

Ambassador Mwangi was educated in Loreto Convent, Msongari, Nairobi where she completed A levels before entering the University of Nairobi. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Hons), in Political Science and Sociology and has a postgraduate degree in Mass Communications.

Previous speakers in the Global Challenge series have included: Prof. Robert Gallo, co-discoverer of the HIV/AIDS virus, on the theme of HIV/AIDS; Dr. Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland, on the theme of climate justice post-Durban; James Kofi Annan, CEO Ghanaian NGO Challenging Heights, on the theme of securing the safety and rehabilitation of former child slaves; and Prof Myles Wickstead, Head of Secretariat to the Commission for Africa (CfA), on the theme of the changing face of aid and development.

The talk will take place from 6-7.30pm on Thursday 4 October in Boole 1, UCC, and is open to members of the public.
