Will more competition in our health care system mean more value for money? This issue will be addressed by the Health Economics Forum on Tuesday 11th September.

The Irish Government has committed to a radical overhaul of our health care system. Competition between independent hospital trusts will be established. Universal Health Insurance will put competing health insurers at the centre of health service financing.

Will increased competition result in more value? What are the substantive policy and operational issues for health care management with increased competition? The implications of these proposed changes will after all be felt across the Irish health care system. UCC’s forum provides the setting for health care professionals and economists alike to discuss this issue.

The panel of speakers reflects the importance of this matter and the potential implications of increased competition in the health care system. Speakers include: Dónal Clancy, Laya Healthcare; Fergus Clancy, Mater Private Group; Deirdre McHugh, The Competition Authority; Jack Nagle, Alpha Primary Care; and Dr Brian Turner from the Health Economics Group at UCC.

In June 2011, the Health Economics Group hosted ‘A New Government – New Health System?’ forum. Due to the popularity and success of last year’s forum, professionals and practitioners in all areas of the Irish health system have again the opportunity to listen to and discuss the potential impacts, benefits and drawbacks of increased competition in our health care system.

The forum will take place on Tuesday 11th September, 2012 from 2pm to 6pm in the Western Gateway Building.

A registration fee of €50 will apply. For further details, contact the Health Economics Group at heg@ucc.ie.
