21.04.2011

Ten high achievers from the world of sport were honoured last eve (April 20th 2011) for their sporting achievements at the 28th Annual UCC Sports Star Awards.

Students from ten different sports clubs were represented at the ceremony and were presented with their awards by Guest of Honour, UCC graduate and former Rugby International, Frankie Sheahan.

UCC Sports Clubs have had a phenomenal year with success in Men’s Volleyball, Badminton, Ladies Basketball, Trampoline, Ultimate Frisbee and  Junior Rugby intervarsities to add to the Sigerson and Collingwood Cup successes to name but a few.  Also, the Senior Rugby Club retained their AIL Division 1B status and the Ladies Hockey Club retained their high standards in the MSL.  The Men’s Hockey Club reached their first national final in 100 years only to lose the Irish Trophy Final 2-1 to South Antrim.

This year’s recipients include All-Ireland Hurling double medal winner Michael Cahill from Tipperary and basketball supreme Clare Rockall who received the MVP at the Basketball intervarsity finals.  Justin Ryan, Rowing receives his second award having won a silver medal at the World U.23 Rowing Championships in late 2010.

Miriam Crowley received an award for her performances with UCC Ladies Hockey and in recognition of her receiving her first Irish Senior Cap this year while Sigerson Cup Captain, Adrian Greaney received the Gaelic football award for his exploits in the Sigerson Cup.

Andrew Neville was honoured for his contribution to UCC Soccer Club’s success in the Collingwood Cup. Andrew has been outstanding for UCC AFC in the MSL all season.

John Ryan received an award for his performances with UCC Rugby Club.  John has been outstanding all season and was selected for Club Ireland International.  Munster and another number of Heineken Cup teams are vying for his signature.

Julie Brien received a Camogie award.  Julie was one of three UCC players to receive an All-Star following their exploits in the Ashbourne Cup.  Julie recently helped her home club Killimor, Galway to All-Ireland Club success – a first for the club.

Two sports made a welcome return to the Awards Ceremony – Jamie Blake won an award for his exploits in Tennis while Aoife O’Loughlin received an award for Fencing.  Aoife received her first Senior Cup in the discipline of Sabre last year and Jamie also received his first Irish Senior Cup in tennis.

This year’s “Special Achievement Award” known as “The Kieran Dowd Perpetual Award” was presented to Dr Len Harty of UCC Rugby Club.  Len received the award for his long standing contribution to the Rugby Club having served two terms as Club President in addition to representing the club at Munster and Irish level.  Len epitomises volunteerism within the UCC Sports Clubs.

A special presentation was also made to Dr Julia Walsh, Director of Sports Studies & PE in recognition of her involvement in UCC, Cork and indeed Irish sport since coming to Cork five years ago. Julia coached the Ladies Basketball team to Intervarsity success this year but, unfortunately, returns to Australia in the coming months.

Personalities from the world of sport, parents, coaches, staff from UCC, UCC Clubs Executive, representatives from The River Lee Hotel and the Bank of Ireland were present at the event.  The event is run in association with The River Lee Hotel and the Bank of Ireland with Christine O’Donovan Director of Sport & Recreation, organiser of the event, acting as MC.
