UCC reports positive trends in commercialising its research
14.04.2011

UCC’s President, Dr Michael Murphy has welcomed UCC’s successful achievements in commercialising its research in 2010. The Office of Technology Transfer – the office responsible for commercialising UCC’s research, recently released highlights from its 2010 Annual Report. The report draws attention to UCC’s steady rate of annual generation of licenses in the mid-teens and spin out companies in the 3 – 5 range. In all, 71 Inventions were disclosed to UCC, 23 Patents were filed, 17 Licenses signed and 3 high potential start ups were formed. The licenses were spread across market sectors – ICT, Bio and food, as well as company size (MNC and SME with the majority – 12 -licenses going to SMEs).

These results prove a broad interest in and appetite for UCC IP. The office placed specific emphasis on identifying and supporting start ups of high potential value where an experienced, commercial CEO is identified to partner with the researchers for the formation of the company. This successful strategy has resulted in the 3 spin out companies that are investment ready and supporting a customer base.

The report also refers to the launch of gatewayUCC, UCC’s state of the art Incubation facilities, which provide a critical link between the internal and external client base of the Office of Tech Transfer.

Commenting on UCC’s achievements, Dr Michael Murphy said:  “UCC remains strongly committed to Ireland’s Innovation agenda. Commercialising our research is critical to this agenda and UCC is proud of its achievements in this regard for 2010. We will continue to invest in our support mechanisms which will ensure the growth in our rate of high value commercialisation activity. We have a strong IP pipeline for 2011, and we look forward to another successful year for the Commercialisation activity in 2011.”
