UCC lecturer admitted to the Royal Irish Academy

Dr John Carey, Senior Lecturer, Department of Early
and Medieval Irish, UCC was recently admitted to the Royal Irish Academy (RIA).
Dr Carey has gained international acclaim for his research on Irish mythology
and legendary history, as well as for his studies of the Christian literature
of early Ireland.
His recent publications include Ireland and the Grail (2007), on the international dimensions of
early Irish narrative material, and an edition of an Irish-language text, The ever-new tongue (In teanga bithnua),
in the Corpus Christianorum series on Biblical Apocrypha (2009). Dr Carey is
currently Principal Investigator of the IRCHSS-funded De Finibus project, for
the study and production of editions of Irish eschatological writings.
Membership
of the Royal Irish Academy is awarded to persons who have attained distinction
in education and research. It is the highest academic honour in Ireland.
Amongst the newly elected Academy members are experts working in mapping,
police governance and accountability, research on kidney disease, biomedical
engineering and web technologies.
Professor Luke Drury, President of the Royal
Irish Academy, said "In admitting these new members, we honour their
contributions to knowledge, intellectual debate and engagement with civic
society. Ireland's future largely depends on having such talented and dedicated
people living and working here; an important function of the Academy is to give
public recognition to this".
