Dr John Carey, Senior Lecturer, Department of Early and Medieval Irish, UCC was recently admitted to the Royal Irish Academy (RIA). Dr Carey has gained international acclaim for his research on Irish mythology and legendary history, as well as for his studies of the Christian literature of early Ireland.
His recent publications include Ireland and the Grail (2007), on the international dimensions of early Irish narrative material, and an edition of an Irish-language text, The ever-new tongue (In teanga bithnua), in the Corpus Christianorum series on Biblical Apocrypha (2009). Dr Carey is currently Principal Investigator of the IRCHSS-funded De Finibus project, for the study and production of editions of Irish eschatological writings.

Membership of the Royal Irish Academy is awarded to persons who have attained distinction in education and research. It is the highest academic honour in Ireland. Amongst the newly elected Academy members are experts working in mapping, police governance and accountability, research on kidney disease, biomedical engineering and web technologies.

Professor Luke Drury, President of the Royal Irish Academy, said "In admitting these new members, we honour their contributions to knowledge, intellectual debate and engagement with civic society. Ireland's future largely depends on having such talented and dedicated people living and working here; an important function of the Academy is to give public recognition to this".
