UCC hosts Nurse & Midwife Prescribing Conference

Nurse and midwife prescribing is one of a number of significant changes to the Irish nurses’ professional role over the past 10 years. Prescriptive authority for nurses was developed as a direct response to patients’ needs that were identified through The Commission on Nursing - A Blueprint for the Future (Department of Health Children, 1998). University College Cork (UCC) has facilitated the nurse prescribing course since April 2007 with the 10th cohort of prescribers commencing in October 2011.

On Friday next, September 9th, UCC’s Departments of Nursing, Pharmacy and Medicine, College of Medicine & Health will host an interdisciplinary conference on nurse and midwife prescribing. The conference will be opened by Mr Seán Sherlock, Minister for Research and Innovation in Brookfield Health Sciences Complex, UCC at 9.30am.

Ms Rena Creedon, Nurse Prescribing Programme Coordinator said the conference will look at how the role of nurse prescribing has advanced to date.  She explained: “Nurse prescribing is a significant change to the nursing role because it substantially expands the core function of nurses and, as a result, considerably extends the horizons for the future of the nursing profession in Ireland. Nurse prescribing is in its infancy in Ireland, however, professional boundaries are already being redefined with nursing roles having an ever increasing responsibility.”

The programme at UCC is multidisciplinary and course content is delivered by the Department of Nursing, Pharmacy and Medicine.
