The Future for Ireland’s Energy & Transport

The future for Ireland’s energy & transport will be the focus for discussion at a major international conference taking place at University College Cork (UCC) next week. Some 200 delegates are expected to attend the Irish Transport Research Network (ITRN2011) conference which will run from August 30th to September 1st in conjunction with the inaugural meeting of the Institute of Electronic and Electrical Engineers (IEEE) Vehicular Technology Society (VTS) UK and Republic of Ireland Chapter on August 30th in UCC.

Mr Alan Kelly, TD, Minister for State at the Department of Transport, Tourism & Sport along with UCC President, Dr Michael Murphy and Mr John Mullins, CEO Bord Gais Eireann will formally open the ITRN2011 on the morning of August 31st.

Many national and international academics, consultants and alternative fuel vehicle manufacturers will present their research and development activities at ITRN2011.

In addition to high-profile keynote speakers, session chairs, the programme will also feature a panel discussion at the Gala Dinner in UCC’s Aula Maxima on August 31st.   Titled “Transportation technology and the road to improved energy efficiency and emissions reduction', panellists will include Dr Ralph Griewing, Head of Electromobility, Siemens worldwide, Mr Marvin Cooke, Toyota, Mr Declan Colley, Irish Examiner, Dr Mary Reidy, IEEE Chair of Electromobility Standardisation and Mr David Twohig, R&D Renault France. The panel will be Chaired by Professor Gerard Wrixon.

Conference Organiser & ITRN2011 Chair, Dr Aoife Foley, School of Engineering, UCC explains: “As an island nation, energy costs and energy resources for transport matter more to us than to most other countries: improvements in transport sustainability will be driven by R&D with better use of our existing transportation infrastructure, smarter use of information communication technology and the application of alternative fuel vehicles.”
