Success for UCC at the “Irish Healthcare Oscars”
21.11.2011

UCC’s Student Health Department is one of the recipients of this year’s Irish Healthcare Awards.  UCC received the award in the category Best Use of Information Technology for their entry “Protecting our future healthcare professionals – an IT success story”.  The award recognises originality, excellence and innovation in healthcare. There was also a commendation for UCC’s Health Information Systems Research Centre for their Electronic Early Warning Store.
The Irish Healthcare Awards, often referred to as “Ireland’s Healthcare Oscars” are organised by the Irish Medical Times.  The trophy was presented to Dr Michael Byrne, Head of the Student Health Department, UCC at a glittering ceremony in Dublin.  Dr Byrne said he was delighted to receive the prestigious Award and paid tribute to all in Student Health at UCC. “It is a tremendous honour to be amongst the great and good of Irish medical life”, he said.

Referring to the winning submission, Dr Byrne explained: “It describes the remarkable levels of immunity to Hepatitis B we have managed to achieve in our Healthcare Students through a co-ordinated programme over the past 4 years, as well as a significant expansion in the range of diseases screened/immunised and students covered. This has all been facilitated by an in-house MS Access Database developed by my Department over this time, and also reflects the considerable effort made by other UCC staff in the Admissions Office, the International Education Office and in the College of Medicine and Health”
