Springboard Initiative targets the Unemployed
27.05.2011

An exciting new Government initiative, Springboard, has been launched to help the unemployed.  The scheme will provide funded part-time education and training opportunities for people who were previously in employment but lost their jobs or were made redundant and who, with some upskilling, could fill current or future job shortages. Springboard, which is managed by the Higher Education Authority, will allow those who undertake the courses to retain their benefits and if they find a job will still be permitted and encouraged to finish their course.

University College Cork  (UCC) is one of the participating universities and will offer two courses: The Certificate in Supply Chain Management and The Certificate in Creative & Digital Marketing.

The Certificate in Supply Chain Management, a part-time programme, consists of six modules (including lean supply chain management, information systems, operations management and purchasing & negotiation).
Dr Séamus O’Reilly, Programme Academic Director of the Certificate in Supply Chain Management said UCC was delighted to be associated with the Springboard initiative.  He said that the university had redesigned its successful Supply Chain Management Programme to accommodate the needs of those who have been made redundant. The UCC programme seeks to maximise the participant’s previous relevant work experience by providing a structured approach to the key elements of supply chain management, e.g. improve supply chain efficiency and effectiveness; enhance process design, customer services and information services; and provide all organisational functions with an acute awareness of costs and the ability to enhance value-adding activities.
Each module of the programme is delivered over a two-day seminar/workshop series in UCC complemented by a half-day review session. Given the mix of Irish-owned and multinational companies exporting from Ireland this is an area of growing employment.  SCM graduates work in various functions including: customer service, procurement, planning, inventory management and logistics. The Certificate in Creative & Digital Marketing
CREATIVE... DIGITAL... MARKETING... In today's noisy world, all three elements may have to be called upon, even by not-for-profit organisations. UCC believes that this is the first course in the country to offer all this in an integrated educational package.
The word 'creative' does indeed come first. Even though students will have no marketing background, we will be introducing them to research techniques normally only practised by leading-edge practitioners, ones that yield the sort of rich raw-material you need to do anything that is creatively different and better.
Likewise, even though students will never have used digital media before, we will introduce them to areas like creative-thinking, design appreciation, design tools and design techniques that are practised only by the few. And when it comes to communication, we will insist that students don't just learn but do. Our modules and workshops will be linked to practical projects that really matter — to students, to us and to clients.
For the first practical assignment that students will be set, have a look at the student web platform that has deliberately been left almost completely empty… But not quite…  http://www.creativeanddigitalmarketing.com/

Places for both courses are limited, so apply online soon through the Springboard portal using http://www.Bluebrick.ie
Closing date:  June 17th 2011
