Topics such as Ocean Energy, Colon Cancer, Functional Food, Quantum vs Classical Worlds, Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Ultra Cold Atoms will be among the topics presented at the event which aims to encourage young scientists to communicate the results of their research to the general public in an easily understandable manner.

The panel of judges for the Final will be chaired by Ms Jennie O’Sullivan, RTE News Cork and also includes Mr Niall Murray, Education Correspondent , Irish Examiner,  Mr Trevor Holmes, Vice President for External Relations, UCC and Ms Siobhan Murphy, PharmaChemical Ireland.

The competition is jointly organised by the College of Science, Engineering and Food Science, the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre and Tyndall National Institute, UCC. This year’s competition has been sponsored by the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre, the Tyndall Institute, and Snap Printing.

The six finalists are:
Anne Blavette, Hydraulics and Marine Research Centre, UCC

Anne Blavette, originally from Brittany, France has BSc in Physics from the University of Rennes and MEng from EPF-Engineering School, Paris. Anne’s research will contribute to removing the barriers to development of the ocean energy industry on a large-scale. Anne also teaches Breton, the Celtic language of Brittany, as part of her volunteering activities in the Breton-Irish association BreizhEire

Sinead Doherty, Teagasc Moorepark Food Research Centre, & Department of Microbiology, UCC Sinead Doherty is a UCD BSc (Hons) in Food Science graduate and was awarded a scholarship to attend Michigan State University where she expanded her expertise and became HACCP/ISO certified.  She spent several years working in the dairy industry which provided a solid foundation for her novel research innovations.  She is now in the final year of her PhD on the design of an encapsulation technology for delivery of probiotics using dairy proteins.

Thomás Fogarty, Department of Physics, UCC
Thomás Fogarty is a native of Glanmire, Cork and a UCC graduate in Physics.

Carola Murphy, Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre & Department of Medicine, UCC
Carola Murphy, from Mallow, Co. Cork graduated with a degree in Microbiology (UCC). Her research on Inflammatory Bowel Disease has involved the development of a new model for the disease which can be used to dissect its biology and facilitate testing of new drugs.

Grace O’Callaghan, Department of Medicine, UCC
Grace O’Callaghan is originally from Mayo but has lived in Cork for many years.  She graduated with a degree in Biochemistry from UCC before undertaking a Masters in Biotechnology. Her research with the Department of Medicine at Cork University Hospital involves deciphering the signalling pathways of colon cancer.  Aside from her research she co-directs an athlete leadership programme with Special Olympics Ireland in Cork.

Laura Russell, Department of Physics and Tyndall National Institute, UCC
A native of Cork, Laura Russell has an undergraduate degree in Physics from UCC. Her research in the Quantum Optics Lab at Tyndall National Institute involves working with ultra cold atoms.  Laura is also a qualified pilot and has been competing in aerobatic competitions in the UK for 3 years.
