Science Raps 2011 Winners Announced

A team from Colaiste an Spiorad Naoimh, Bishopstown, Cork are the winners in the senior category of this year’s Science Raps competition.  James Carr composed and performed  the vocals for  “The Chemistry of Life” rap and the video was produced and edited by Eoghan Calnan. Additional support was provided by their “actor” classmates Luke Delaney, James Meeke, David O’Neill and John Spillane.

“The Chemistry of Life” was the theme for this year’s Science Rap competition organised by the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre (APC; http://apc.ucc.ie) as part of Science Week.  To enter the competition students were requested to video their Science Rap, upload on YouTube and send on the link.

Joint first prize winners in the junior category are “LettusWrap” by Megan McDonald, Megan Conroy and Sinead McDonald from Bush Post Primary School, Riverstown Dundalk and “ScienceRaps2011” by Mistura and Bolaji Arowolo from Colaiste Bride, Clondalkin and Moyle Park College Clondalkin, Dublin.

Judge, Marc McCarthy from the Alimentary Pharmbiotic Centre said: “The winning entries are really inspirational!  We were delighted to receive entries from all around the country, from Cork and Kerry to Dublin, Dundalk and Oileain Arann. It’s great to see so many young people willing to enter and learn about science in such a fun way. It beats having your head stuck in a book any day!!”

This year’s competition was sponsored by Discover Science and Engineering (DSE) and Stream Solutions.  DSE, organisers of Science Week www.scienceweek.ie, aim to promote the relevance of science, engineering and technology in our everyday lives. Stream Solutions - The Mac Experts  -, www.stream.ie,  provide Mac and AV solutions to the education sector and are pioneering the iPad movement in schools.

The Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre is a gastrointestinal health research centre funded by Science Foundation Ireland and is a partnership between University College Cork, Teagasc and Cork Institute of Technology.  The independent international ratings agency Thomson Reuters Science Watch global analysis, recently ranked University College Cork at number two in the world for probiotics research, due to publications from researchers in the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre (http://sciencewatch.com/ana/st/probiotics/institution/)
