Second year Chinese Studies undergraduate, Tricia Kehoe, was recently awarded the prize of 'Outstanding Eloquence' at the Chinese Bridge Chinese Proficiency competition for world college students in Changsha city, Hunan. Following her win at the Irish Chinese Bridge competition in March 2011, Kehoe was selected to represent Ireland in competing against some 150 students from all over the world.
Co-organised by Hanban and Hunan TV, this year’s broadcast of the popular competition attracted over 200 million viewers. Comprised of several performances, including speech and talent, as well as a written exam and test on general knowledge of China, Kehoe had received several weeks of speech tutoring and calligraphy guidance from UCC Confucius Institute staff, Ms Tong Xiaoling, Ms Zeng Yan and Mr Guo Zhouyang. Speaking on her competition experience, Kehoe said: “It was truly an amazing and encouraging experience to meet so many incredibly talented individuals from all over the world who shared my deep interest in Chinese language and culture. Though the competition itself was quite intense and even exhausting at times, for all the new friends and learning, it was absolutely worthwhile and I was so grateful for the opportunity to take part.” Tricia who is currently studying Chinese language in Sichuan University received a one year Confucius Institute Scholarship for further Chinese language study in a Chinese university and return airfare as part of her prize.
