New Industry Partnerships announced for Tyndall
24.11.2011

Ms Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, EU Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science visited Tyndall National Institute, UCC on November 24th 2011.  During the visit, new partnerships with Applied Materials, Inc and Covidien were announced.
Applied Materials, Inc., the global leader in providing equipment to enable the manufacture of advanced semiconductor devices, has joined the Science Foundation Ireland-funded Strategic Research Cluster FORME (Functional Oxides and Related Materials for Electronics). The research cluster, led by Tyndall National Institute, UCC and working at a university site in Cork, focuses on the development of materials and processes to enable the production of faster, smaller, more power-efficient logic processors for computing and associated memory and data storage issues.

“We are delighted to welcome Applied Materials to the research cluster. As a global industry leader, Applied Materials brings with it extensive knowledge and experience in the design of processes and equipment used in semiconductor manufacturing,” says Prof. Martyn Pemble, Tyndall Researcher and Head of the FORME Strategic Research Cluster.

“FORME was created in 2007 and since its inception the group has produced exciting results in the area of advanced CMOS technology.  Applied Materials possesses an enormous amount of expertise in one of our key technology areas - atomic layer deposition (ALD). The fact that Applied Materials chose FORME and Tyndall after a global search for a new academic partner clearly demonstrates the worth of our work as perceived by the electronics industry,” adds Pemble.

“Applied Materials is excited to invest in this research project and we would like to thank Industrial Development Agency (IDA) Ireland for their support,” said Klaus Schuegraf, Chief Technology Officer of Applied Materials’ Silicon Systems Group. “We are impressed with the quality of work and results achieved to date. Applied will provide and install multi-chamber state-of-the-art ALD equipment at the Tyndall research facility.  Also, we have a full-time member of our staff as a Researcher in Residence working directly alongside the Tyndall academic and industry partners."

The Tyndall National Institute, UCC has announced a strategic partnership with Covidien, a leading global provider of healthcare products. More than €2 million will be invested focusing on Advanced Sensors Research for medical device respiratory technologies.

Earlier this month, Covidien announced that the Company and the Irish Government [through its investment promotion agency, IDA] are jointly supporting several projects, which represent an investment of more than €25 million.

Professor Roger Whatmore, CEO, Tyndall National Institute, UCC said: “We are very excited to work with Covidien on the Advanced Sensors Research programme and look forward to working with researchers from the Company’s international and Irish operations. Irish investment in research, development & innovation and in the Tyndall National Institute have made Ireland an attractive location where leaders like Covidien can continue to innovate new products and provide better healthcare for patients.”

Professor Whatmore went on to say “The partnership will provide Covidien with access to Tyndall’s ISO certified semiconductor wafer fabrication facilities, advanced electronic and photonic packaging cleanrooms and to our advanced test and characterisation facilities.”

UCC President, Dr Michael Murphy, said it was an enormous pleasure to welcome Commissioner Geoghegan-Quinn and her colleagues on an inaugural visit to Ireland’s largest research institute at UCC. " You are visiting an exemplar of research that is focused strategically on new products, new technologies and new processes designed specifically to meet the needs of the European and global consumer markets, to meet societal demands for faster, more efficient and more extensive communication capabilities", he said.

Roland Pfleger, Vice President and General Manager, Covidien Respiratory and Monitoring Solutions, EMEA, said that Ireland’s track record in successful innovation and research was key in deciding to locate the projects in Ireland. “Tyndall’s world-class research in Information & Communication Technology (ICT) and its strategy on the convergence of ICT into healthcare and medical device markets, were important factors in establishing the Advanced Sensors Research partnership with Tyndall in Ireland.”  See http://www.tyndall.ie/ for full details.
