MSPI Accreditation Award for Glucksman Gallery
30.06.2011

Congratulations to the Lewis Glucksman Gallery, UCC who this week has been awarded interim accreditation by the Heritage Council under the Museum Standards Programme for Ireland (MPSI).  The Lewis Glucksman Gallery was awarded interim accreditation after flooding damage hampered their planned application to the Programme in 2009. Over the last year the Gallery has shared its flooding disaster and recovery experiences of 2009 with the Museum Sector, in particular offering advice on developing effective Disaster Plans.

Presenting the awards Minister of Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht Affairs Jimmy Deenihan, TD commented “With a standards programme it is more manageable to plan around and accommodate economic and resource constraints to maintain access to and enhance our understanding of our shared cultural heritage.  The long-term aim is always to hand over to new generations the rich heritage which is our shared birthright.”

The Museum Standards Programme, the first of its kind in Ireland is an important initiative which sets out to improve all aspects of Ireland’s museum practice and in particular raise the standards of care for collections across Irish museums and galleries. A voluntary programme, it has attracted involvement from across the cultural spectrum from national institutions to small, volunteer led organisations.

The Heritage Council’s commitment to care of collections is demonstrated through its support of the Museum Standards Programme for Ireland. Speaking about the Programme, Michael Starrett, Heritage Council Chief Executive said, “In times where the importance of tourism cannot be underestimated, it is imperative that we ensure the standards of our museums remain high. Accreditation under this Programme offers quality assurance to visitors that the museums they are visiting are adhering to a high set of standards in the management of the museum, care of collections and visitor services.”

Dr Michael Murphy, President of UCC said, “UCC is committed to the care and management of its cultural assets and I share the congratulations and gratitude of the University to all members of the Glucksman team who have effected such terrific progress in achieving accreditation from the Museum Standards Programme of Ireland. It is wonderful to see the acknowledgement of all that has been achieved by the gallery in the assessors’ report.”

“The Council is delighted to award interim accreditation to Lewis Glucksman Gallery today. This achievement reflects their hard work and continued dedication to the Programme”, commented Mr. Starrett.
