MMI Clinical & Translational Research Scholars Programme Launch
15.03.2011

UCC is a key partner in a prestigious new Molecular Medicine Ireland (MMI) PhD programme, funded through Cycle 5 of the Government's Programme for Research in Third-Level Institutions. This unique cross-institutional PhD programme, which integrates with industry and clinical research centres, will prepare graduates for careers in industry, academic medical centres and as biomedical entrepreneurs.

Molecular Medicine Ireland was established in 2008 by the National University of Ireland Galway, the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, University College Cork, University College Dublin and Trinity College Dublin and their associated academic hospitals, as a research partnership to accelerate the translation of biomedical research into improved diagnostics and therapies for patients.

The MMI Clinical & Translational Research Scholars Programme (CTRSP) is a unique cross-institutional 4-year PhD programme which will develop graduates with knowledge and skills to pursue disease-focused research and bridge gaps between basic scientists, clinical scientists and industry.

Applications are now invited from high-calibre candidates. MMI scholars will be based in either University College Cork, NUI Galway, Trinity College Dublin or University College Dublin. Year 1 of the programme comprises taught modules and placements in industry, in academic research labs and in clinical research facilities. Scholars will then select PhD projects in areas including drug discovery, discovery/validation of biomarkers and patient-oriented research in clinical research facilities.

This programme is developed with and includes significant involvement of industry and of the Irish Medicines Board. Industry partners include Amgen, Creganna-Tactx Medical, Merrion Pharmaceuticals, Medtronic, Opsona, and Pfizer.
