Brian O’Doherty, one of Ireland’s most acclaimed artists on the international stage will launch the opening at a short public seminar immediately preceding the exhibition. This seminar is dedicated to the launch of the Jennings Gallery programme of Patronage supporting the integration of Arts into heathcare education.

UCC’s College of Medicine and Health has embraced the work of the Gallery and have committed to the inclusion of the arts in their mission for the education of health professionals, not just using visual media but with literature, music and poetry.  UCC President, Dr Michael Murphy  said the Hunt Report on higher education calls on us to develop in our students those generic skills needed for active engagement in society and in the workplace. “There is a growing body of international evidence suggesting that the inclusion of arts and humanities in medical and healthcare education improves clinical skills, heightens observation, improves understanding and empathy in the formation of health professionals and ultimately translates into better patient care”, he said.

The seminar will take place in Lecture Theatre G.05, Brookfield Health Sciences Complex, UCC at 6.30pm on June 9th 2011.
