Careers in the high-tech sector will be demonstrated to talented transition year students this week when Tyndall National Institute, UCC and Cork Electronics Industry Association (CEIA) play host to a group of 20 students who are participating in the Transition Year Work Experience programme (March 7th-11th 2011). The students, from 8 schools across Cork city and county, will divide their time between Tyndall, UCC, CIT and 10 high-tech engineering companies.

With support from the Department of Electronic Engineering, CIT and the Department of Electrical Engineering, UCC and world-class companies such as EMC, Moog, ON Semiconductor, Horner, S3, M/A-Com Technology Solutions and Flextronics, the transition year students will experience a week that is designed to be a comprehensive insight into all aspects of research and engineering careers.  Companies from both industry groups CEIA and Midas (Microelectronic Industry Design Association) are opening their doors to students for an on-site placement day as part of the programme.

Throughout the week, researchers and engineers from the institutes and companies will bring physics and electronics to life for the students by showing them how basic principles can be applied to all areas of life today.  Students will investigate the materials, components and systems that form the basis of much of the technology on which they rely so heavily in their everyday lives such as mobile phones, computers, iPods, and the Internet.  They will learn a variety of new skills from using computer simulation tools to model circuits to how light can be manipulated for applications in telecommunications. The students will also carry out hands on demonstrations of circuit design, energy engineering and fibre optics systems, as well as touring high-tech laboratories and fabrication facilities.

Innovation is a key aspect of engineering and the students will take part in a competition to find the most innovative idea based on the projects and information they will be exposed to over the course of the week. They will present their ideas for judging on Friday, March 11th and each member of the winning team will receive a Flip Mini Video Camcorder.

CEIA and Tyndall run a number of valuable outreach initiatives which give students a real opportunity to see the career possibilities available to them in this area.

In response to the large number of applications to the programme, Tyndall and CEIA are hosting a second TY Work Experience Week from March 28th to April 1st 2011.
