Cork Chamber President, John Mullins congratulated all the school teams from the Munster and South East regions that took part in the UCC Transition Year Business Project Awards recently and congratulated the winning entries.  Commenting on the awards, Mr Mullins stated that “The Chamber is pleased to have the opportunity to support these awards in conjunction with main sponsors BNY Mellon and partners University College Cork.  In addition to fostering closer links between the business and academic communities, the awards very much correspond with the efforts of the Chamber’s Financial Services Working Group, which is at the forefront of promoting careers in the financial services sector in the region.  We certainly hope that the experience gained by these students in developing projects will encourage some to pursue studies in a business related discipline in the future.”

The Transition Year Enterprise Awards are an initiative of UCC’s College of Business of Law.  The purpose of the project was to get students to write about their experience of running a company/enterprise or bank in their school with a view to encouraging them to consider studying business at degree level and subsequent career progression in this area. This year, students were also asked by the judging panel to demonstrate how businesses can play an active part in their local economies to facilitate the economic, educational and socially responsible development of the communities within which they operate, in addition to a demonstration of how individual students contributed to the project.

Mr Eoin Motherway, Head of Ireland Fund Accounting with BNY Mellon and Chairman of Cork Chamber’s Financial Services Working Group, stated that “The quality of entries into this year’s competition was impressive.  The imagination, ingenuity and overall conversant display of business, accounting, marketing and presentation skills by all the teams was eye opening. Distilling the talents on offer to the eventual team winners was a challenge but one laden with tremendous optimism and inspiration that such promising acumen exists in our schools.”

“BNY Mellon are delighted to be associated with such a thoroughly positive initiative for the future. It resonates with our focus on innovation and our company values of Client Focus, Trust, Teamwork and Outperformance" Mr. Motherway concluded.

Anne Wallace, Student Recruitment & Liaison Officer with the College of Business and Law stated that she was delighted with the record number of entries received and the very high standard.  “The sponsorship from BNY Mellon has been instrumental to the continued success of the initiative. I am also very grateful to Cork Chamber, the Commerce Faculty at UCC and Musgrave Retail Partners Ireland Ltd for their continued support”, said Ms Wallace.

“Fashion Formula” from Mount St Michael, Rosscarbery was chosen as this year’s winning project by judges from BNY Mellon, Cork Chamber and UCC. “Memory Fountain” by CBS The Green, Tralee and “net2go - Technonet Ltd.” by St. Brogan's College, Bandon were awarded with 2nd and 3rd place prizes respectively.
