Die Welt features UCC Research Centre
07.12.2011

UCC’s Hydraulics and Maritime Research Centre (HMRC) was the recent focus of a visit by Tina Kaiser, UK Correspondent for Die Welt newspaper. Tina visited the HMRC to conduct research for a series of articles on Ireland’s export economy of computing, games and cleantech.

The articles concentrated on areas of the IDA’s 2020 strategy which include Cleantech and Ocean energy. The HMRC in UCC has been involved in Ocean Energy R&D development for over 30 years, houses the only facilities in Ireland for testing of devices, is an internationally recognised centre of excellence in the field, and is proud of its role in supporting Industrial development.

During her visit, Tina had the opportunity to interview Tom Benson, a Killarney based wave energy developer who was testing his wave energy device in HMRC’s facilities. The device concept ORLA, named for Tom's daughter, has been co-funded by SEAI's Ocean Energy Development Unit prototype fund.

Tina also spoke with Professor Tony Lewis, Professor of Engineering at UCC, to get a deeper understanding of the energy research and development happening in UCC and Ireland.

The article was published on December 4th 2011 in the Die Welt Sunday Supplement magazine , http://www.welt.de/print/wams/wirtschaft/article13749705/Das-neue-Irland.html
