Chinese Teachers’ Training

The first Chinese Language Teachers' Workshop in Ireland was held in UCC recently. The Irish Centre for Chinese Teachers’ Training was launched at the Workshop. The training centre will operate under the umbrella of UCC’s School of Asian Studies and becomes the first institution of its kind in Ireland for Chinese language teachers.

 

The Workshop also launched two curricula and books produced by the Irish Institute of Chinese Studies (UCC) and UCC Confucius Institute.:

  • Chinese Language Curriculum in Irish Higher Education
  • Chinese Curriculum for Transition Year Students in Irish Secondary Schools
  • Introduction to Chinese Language and Culture
  • Business Chinese Language and Culture - Elementary Level

The workshop was co-organised by UCC School of Asian Studies and UCC Confucius Institute. The purpose of this Workshop was to

  • review the current and future context for the teaching of Chinese in Ireland
  • provide an overview of current provision and to share knowledge and experience about curriculums’ design, pedagogical practice, materials and assessment procedures
  • establish a forum for teachers in Chinese language and culture education in Ireland.

More than 30 delegates from UCD Applied Languages Center, UCD Confucius Institute, Dundalk Institute of Technology, Oriental Treasure, Trinity College Dublin, Marino Institute of Education, NUI Maynooth, the Post-Primary Languages Initiative, the Irish Chinese Contact Group, UCC Confucius Institute and UCC School of Asian Studies participated in the workshop and discussed curriculum, pedagogy, teaching materials, on-line resources and teaching methods.
