Challenges facing the Irish Education System
04.05.2011

A panel of international experts will assemble on May 5th for a Public Debate titled “Education for what? Educational Systems and Social Models in Ireland and Abroad”. The event will take place in Blackwater Castle, Castletownroche, Co. Cork, 4-6pm.  The failure of Ireland’s banking and property sectors and its regulatory and political systems have raised questions about the so-called ‘Irish social model’ which prevailed during the Celtic Tiger period. Social models represent ideas about the relationship between community and society; the role of individual citizens and ideals of what constitute the good life.

Social models are particularly influential in how a society structures its education system. The current Irish crisis invites a number of questions for the educational sector:

Which social values can or should be prioritised in its education system?
Whose social needs should or can be addressed?
Which social skills can and should be developed?
How can education play a role in overcoming crises and enacting change?

Panellists for the Debate include:

The Public Debate is part of the 3rd annual "Theory and Philosophy Summer School" organised by UCC’s School of Sociology and Philosophy which runs this week at Blackwater Castle, Castletownroche, Co. Cork.  The theme of this year's Summer School is "Representation," and will be explored from a wide range of different perspectives; philosophical and sociological, theoretical and applied. The School is designed for the needs of postgraduate students & researchers, especially doctoral candidates, in the Arts, Humanities, & Social Sciences, in Sociology, Philosophy, History, Anthropology, Politics, Languages, Arts, Literature and Classics, from universities throughout Ireland, Europe and around the world who are developing theoretical and interpretive paradigms for their research.
