Asia’s Rise and its Impact on Europe

What does Asia’s astonishing rise mean for Ireland and Europe and what are the challenges and opportunities that it presents. This is the question being posed at a major international conference being held at University College Cork on September 29-30th. The third annual conference of the Asian Studies Ireland Association (ASIA) brings together academics, journalists and business people from Ireland, Europe and Asia to exam the theme “Asia’s Rise and Its Impact on Europe and Ireland: Challenges and Opportunities.”
Tánaiste and Minister
for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Mr Eamon Gilmore will deliver the keynote speech
titled “Asia's Rise and Its Impact on Europe and Ireland: Challenges and Opportunities” at 11.30am, September 30th. Among
the eminent academics will be Professor Louis Brennan (TCD) who will discuss
“Foreign Direct Investment from Emerging Asia: Opportunities and
Challenges”. Dr Nicholas O’Brien
(EU Advisor, Department of Finance) will focus on Irish Investment in China
while Dr Declan Jordan (UCC) will discuss “Business-level Innovation in
Vietnam: Does Location Matter”. Mr
John Mullins, President of Cork Chamber will chair a networking event titled
“Doing Business with Asia: Prospects and Challenges”.
The Asian Studies
Ireland Association (ASIA) was launched in November 2008 with representatives
from Irish universities, think-tanks, cultural entities, business, and public
administration cooperate to promote the study, teaching and research of topics
relating to Asia, in particular EU-Asia related matters.
This year’s
conference begins with a networking event at the River Lee Hotel on Thursday
September 29th at 6pm while the main section of the conference will
be held at UCC’s Devere Hall, Áras na Mac Léinn on Friday, September 30th
