Will the new Government’s radical health reform proposals work? That is the question that will be addressed at a forum, titled “A New Government – New Health System?” hosted by the Health Economics Group in the Department of Economics at University College Cork on June 22nd 2011. The Government’s proposals envisage the most radical shake-up of the health system since the foundation of the State, with the elimination of the existing two-tier health system and the introduction of free GP care for all and universal health insurance.

“The Government’s proposals will have major implications right across the health system.  GPs and consultants will face new reimbursement arrangements, hospitals will have to compete for patients, while insurers will have a much greater role in purchasing care on behalf of the entire population.  These perspectives will all be discussed at the forum,” said Dr Brian Turner from the Health Economics Group.  “The Dutch system has been cited as a model on which Fine Gael in particular based its proposals, and an expert from the Netherlands will also discuss the health system there,” he added.

Speakers will include Actuary, John Armstrong; IMO President, Dr Ronan Boland; Michael Cullen, CEO of the Beacon Medical Group; Dr Brian Turner from the Health Economics Group at UCC and Professor Wynand van de Ven from Erasmus University in Rotterdam.

This forum is designed to give professionals and practitioners in all areas of the Irish health system an opportunity to hear about and discuss various aspects of the new proposals, including how the proposals will affect them and what issues need to be clarified.

The forum will take place on Wednesday, 22nd June from 9:30am – 1:00pm in Boole 2, UCC.  A registration fee of €25 will apply.  To register for this event, or for further details, please contact the Health Economics Group at heg@ucc.ie
