University College Cork (UCC) and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) renew Joint PhD Agreement

Dr Helke Hillebrand, Dean of Graduate Studies at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), visited UCC on November 4th 2009 to sign an updated agreement which facilitates the awarding of joint PhDs by the two institutions.

Dr Helke Hillebrand, Dean of Graduate Studies at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), visited UCC on November 4th 2009 to sign an updated agreement which facilitates the awarding of joint PhDs by the two institutions.
UCC President, Dr Michael Murphy, who signed the agreement on behalf of the University said: “International collaborations such as this are part of UCC’s Strategic Plan to be a world-class university linking our region to the globe, as outlined in the University's Plan for 2009-2012”. Under the agreement, any PhD student who is awarded a place on EMBL’s International PhD Programme, has the option of registering and being awarded a PhD degree jointly by UCC and EMBL.
“The quality of EMBL’s International Programme, the people, the science, the facilities, the international environment and the collaborative spirit at EMBL are remarkable. UCC is delighted to be the Irish University partner in this programme” said Professor Alan Kelly, Dean of Graduate Studies at UCC.
Also present at the signing was Professor Patrick Fitzpatrick, Head of the College of Science Engineering and Food Science at UCC who said: “Collaboration with international organisations such as EMBL strengthens the world-class research capabilities of UCC students and staff and is critical to the transfer of knowledge and internationalisation of our research programmes. We are fortunate to have a number of EMBL graduates now working in UCC which clearly demonstrates the direct benefits of such a relationship to the Irish research community. We will actively encourage our undergraduate students to apply to the EMBL International PhD Programme”.
“EMBL is delighted to continue its association with UCC, which is a member in our network of partner Universities. EMBL would like to develop the relationship further, and strongly encourages Irish undergraduate students to apply to EMBL’s PhD Programme”, said Dr Helke Hillebrand, Dean of Graduate Studies at EMBL.
EMBL’s International PhD Programme was launched in 1983 and EMBL has joint degree arrangements in place with 29 universities in 19 countries, including UCC representing Ireland.
