UCC's Archaeology Department celebrates centenary with Public Conference

This year marks a century of Archaeology as an academic discipline in University College Cork. To celebrate the occasion, the Archaeology Department is hosting a Public Conference titled "Origins of a City - The Archaeology of Viking and Medieval Cork" on April 24th-25th next.
Members of the public, UCC staff and students are invited to the conference which will review archaeological research on the Viking and medieval walled town. Prior to the Conference on Saturday, April 25th Professor Pat Wallace, Director of the National Museum of Ireland, will deliver a public lecture titled "The Vikings and archaeological definitions of our first towns" in Boole IV Lecture Theatre on Friday, April 24th at 7pm.

UCC has been a centre for the study of Archaeology since the first professor, Sir Bertram Windle, was appointed in 1908. The Department has grown steadily over the past century, acquiring a reputation for excellence in teaching and research. The Department trains archaeologists at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, offering stimulating courses on a wide range of periods and subjects.

The Conference will open at 9am on Saturday, April 25th with a  presentation by Rose Cleary on Cork City Urban Archaeology and University College Cork.  Maurice Healy will follow with a talk on The Viking and Medieval Archaeology of Cork City in a wider context.

Recent Excavations in Viking and Medieval Cork will be the theme of  talks by Hilary Kelleher, Moira Ní Loinsigh and Deborah Sutton who will discuss excavations at South Main Street.

Life and Society in Viking in Medieval Cork will be discussed by Claire McCutcheon who will talk about Pottery from Medieval Cork followed by Elizabeth Heckett whose topic will be Textiles from Medieval Cork and concluding with Merieal McClathcie who will focus on Food in Medieval Cork: evidence from plant remains.

The theme of Protecting the Past follows at 3.30pm with a presentation by Catherine Desmond on Legal Protection of the Urban Past in Cork City and Ciara Brett who will discuss Cork City Council and the changing face of Cork.

The Programme will conclude with closing remarks by Professor Patrick Wallace at 4.30pm.

The Conference will take place in Boole IV Lecture Theatre.  Admission is free and no registration is required.
