02.05.2009

The outstanding success in sport by UCC was acknowledged yesterday (Friday, May 1st 2009) at the university when Dr Michael Murphy, President hosted a reception to honour the clubs who were most successful throughout the year.
In his speech to the clubs, Dr Murphy referred to the Sports Star Awards Ceremony which took place earlier in the week. "I was delighted to present the students with their awards which reflect the success of team sports in UCC this year", he said.  He also expressed his pleasure at hosting the reception for clubs in recognition of their remarkable achievements. He extended his best wishes to the students in their forthcoming examinations and looked forward to continued success in the future.

Dr Eamonn Cashell, Chair, Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) Sports Council and Daniel Goulding, Captain of CIT's Sigerson Cup winning team were also present at the ceremony.

Clubs Honoured:

The Badminton Club: regained the title they won for the first time two years ago and are heading to Switzerland in June representing the Irish Universities in the European University Championships.
They have also won numerous club titles in Cork and Munster and now go forward to the All Ireland Club Championships and hope to regain the All Ireland Club title they also won two years ago.

The Ladies Basketball Club: intervarsity champions for the first time having been beaten finalists in the previous three finals. Were unlucky in their bid for league success earlier this week when they narrowly lost the league play-offs against UL.
The Ladies Freshers also won their intervarsities.

The Kickboxing Club: overall intervarsity champions for the first time in the clubs short history. Individual successes at previous intervarsities.

Ultimate Frisbee: an extremely active club and the beauty of this club is that competition is for mixed teams as well as individual sex teams. The club was outdoor intervarsity winners for the first time also this year and went on to represent the Irish Universities at the British University Championships recently representing UCC with pride.

The Orienteering Club while small in number came home from the intervarsities with the Men's "A" team taking First place, and with individual winners in the Men's "B" and Women's "B" categories.

The Ladies Volleyball Club won the intervarsities back in November to set the tone for the year. Again, as intervarsity winners they went on to represent the Irish Universities in the British University Championships. Many of this team were international students and it is great to see international students representing UCC whilst studying here.

The Soccer Club won the Crowley Cup for the third year in a row. This is a Junior Intervarsity for those who did not play in the Collingwood Cup. Well done on achieving the 3-in-a-row.

The Hurling Club finally brought the Fitzgibbon Cup back to UCC following an extensive break. A tremendous week-end of hurling saw them regain their position as the top senior hurling university & college in Ireland. They warmed up for the Fitzgibbon by winning the League title also to make it a memorable double for the team.
The Freshers were beaten finalists in their All Ireland Colleges Championship Final.
The Hurling Club was awarded "Club of the Year" by the Clubs Executive this year.
Good luck with the forthcoming County Championship.

The Trampoline Club are continuing to grow as a  force and this year saw the Club bring four individual national titles to Cork last weekend. They are an extremely dedicated group and all other colleges and universities enjoy coming to Cork because of the facilities available and the organisational abilities of this club.

The Ladies Hockey Club are back where they want to be - a major force in Munster hockey.
Following their defeat in the Chilean Cup ( Intervarsities ) Final in November, the team has grown in strength and has won: The Munster Senior Cup for the first time in 14 years, The Examiner Cup.  They were beaten in a play off last weekend for the Munster League Title. However, more importantly they have qualified for the All Ireland League next year.

The Rugby Club: What a year!!!!
Eight pieces of silverware this year already and a possibility of two more.
Every team within the club this year has produced silverware: Junior 1, 2, 3, Under 20's and
The Senior Team finally gaining promotion to the All Ireland Division 1 for next year and will contest the All Ireland Division 2 Final on Saturday, May 9th to complete a memorable year.
