UCC hosts Symposium on German-Irish Relations since 1989

UCC’s German Department will host a symposium on the theme Spotlight Germany: German-Irish Relations since 1989 – Developing International Careers: Theory and Practice at UCC on Friday, November 20th 2009.
UCC students, German teachers, Career Guidance Teachers, Leaving Certificate students are invited to the Symposium which will run from 11am to 4.30pm in Brookfield Health Sciences Complex G04, College Road.

Dr Claire O’Reilly, from UCC’s German Department will open the Symposium followed by Professor Niamh O’Mahony (European Business School, Reutlingen University) who will discuss German-Irish Business Relations since 1989: A Stocktake. Professor O'Mahony is Professor for Anglo-American Studies, Head of Languages and Programme Director of the MSc in International Management at the ESB Business School, Reutlingen University, Germany.

Ms Angela Byrne (Enterprise Ireland) will deliver a presentation at 12 noon titled: Achtung Germany!  The next wave of international sales and marketing career opportunities for Irish graduates - an Enterprise Ireland Roadmap.  Ms Byrne is Senior Management Development Advisor, Enterprise Ireland (EI) since March 2009. She took up this post following a 12 year assignment in Germany where she was Manager German, Austria & Switzerland for EI in Düsseldorf (2003–2008) and previously worked for two years as a market advisor for EI’s portfolio of software companies. This session is appropriate for students who wish to study German at third level and will explore future job prospects in terms of a business and language degree (German).

The afternoon session at 2.15pm will be addressed by Ms Karla Eubel-Kasper (International Consultant) who will focus on Internationalisation of a German company: The case of Bosch. Ms Karla Eubel-Kasper studied both languages (English and French) and Economics at the University of Saarbrücken, Germany. From 1972 to 2002 she worked for the Robert Bosch Corporation, Stuttgart on the Board of Management.

Ms Eubel-Kasper will also present a talk at the following session at 3.20pm titled Advancement of the International Career Profile: Theory and Practice for Irish Undergraduates.
