UCC hosts Intellectual Disability Nursing Conference
20.04.2009

Intellectual Disability Nursing will be the focus of a conference taking place in UCC on Friday, April 24th 2009. Over 400 students in the Intellectual Disability/Learning Disability (ID/LD) nursing sector from all over Ireland and the UK will attend the "Positive Choices Conference 2009".
The conference is an annual event which celebrates the achievements of students studying to become registered nurses, specially trained to care for people with Intellectual Disability/Learning Disability in Ireland and the UK. This is the fifth year of the conference and the first time it has taken place outside the UK.  The event is also significant in terms of Irish Healthcare history as it also coincides with the 50th Anniversary of the Inauguration of Intellectual Disability Nursing in Ireland.

Elaine Drummond, Branch Leader, Intellectual Disability Nursing at UCC, expressing her delight at hosting the conference for the first time, explained: "The conference is at the forefront of knowledge technology, enhancing educational opportunities for students. International networking has opened up relationships across the five nations for both delegates and organisers, and will continue to provide platforms to bridge the inclusion agenda set out by Valuing People (UK) and Brighter Futures (NI). The conference also supports the leading edge agenda of Access/Widening Participation by encouraging students from local schools to participate in an art exhibition on display at UCC prior to the conference.╙

The BSc Intellectual Disability Nursing degree is one of five undergraduate programmes at UCC╒s School of Nursing & Midwifery along with the BSc General Nursing, BSc Psychiatric Nursing, BSc Integrated Children/General Nursing, BSc Midwifery also on offer.

The conference is free of charge for the 450 students/delegates with all costs being fund raised by an organising group of lecturers. Sponsorship is kindly acknowledged from Ireland and the UK including Clinical Solutions, COPE Foundation, Learning Disability Practice (RCN), Valuing People, National Council for the Professional Development for Nursing and Midwifery (Ireland), Oxygen Care Limited, Uppercase, Oxford University Press, Dell (Ireland) and National Network of Learning Disability Nursing. The organising group would like to thank the sponsors for their support and funding to enable UCC to host the conference in 2009.
