UCC Academic elected President of the Sociological Association

Dr Ciarán McCullagh, Department of Sociology, UCC was elected President of the Sociological Association at its annual conference held in Waterford Institute of Technology earlier this month.
The Sociological Association of Ireland is “the professional association for sociologists researching and studying Irish society as well as sociologists working in Ireland and abroad who have an interest in Irish society”. Dr McCullagh is a Statutory Lecturer in Sociology and has published articles and books on the sociology of Crime and the sociology of the Mass Media. He is on the Board of ISSI21, the research institute in UCC for the Social Sciences, part of the Irish Social Science Platform, set up with funding from PRTLI4. He is also an elected member of the Governing Body of UCC.
 
UCC’s Sociology Department is already deeply involved in the activities of the Sociological Association of Ireland. It is the current home for the Irish Journal of Sociology. The editorial team consists of of Dr Linda Connolly, Dr Kathy Glavanis-Grantham, Dr Tracey Skillington, Dr Niamh Hourigan, Afric O’Grada and Paula Meaney. The journal has now been taken up by Manchester University Press and will be published by them, beginning with two issues per year and expanding in the future into three issues per year. This new arrangement is a significant development for the journal with the potential to introduce it to a wider international audience.
