Then + Now: Evolving Art Practices will open in the Lewis Glucksman Gallery on Tuesday, July 21st. The exhibition features selected artists from the University College Cork Art Collection.

Then + Now: Evolving Art Practices will open in the Lewis Glucksman Gallery on Tuesday, July 21st. The exhibition features selected artists from the University College Cork Art Collection.
The exhibition sets up a dialogue between older
and newer works by the selected artists, exploring how their art
practices have developed over time and, in some cases, through
different media. Participating artists include: Katherine Boucher Beug, Barrie Cooke, Maud Cotter, Dorothy Cross, Simon English, Helen Farrell, Billy Foley, Joy Gerrard, Clare Langan, Louis le Brocquy, Anne Madden, Alice Maher, Janet Mullarney, Colette Nolan, Eilís O’Connell, Brian O’Doherty, Hughie O’Donoghue, Mick O’Shea, Michael Quane, Ben Reilly, Vivienne Roche, Paul Seawright, Charles Tyrell.
Then + Now represents changing ideas in Irish art, highlighting works from the 1960s to the present day. The exhibition further explores a number of sub-themes, including the enduring significance of the Irish landscape to artists as diverse as Barrie Cooke, Billy Foley and Clare Langan, and the development of figurative painting in works by Hughie O’Donoghue and Louis le Brocquy. Then + Now also brings together works by Maud Cotter, Alice Maher and Dorothy Cross; contemporary artists who have each played a major role in re-thinking the possibilities of sculpture. As a special feature of the exhibition, the seminal artist and writer Brian O’Doherty has constructed a version of one of his early ‘rope drawing’ installations. This work will be presented alongside his more recent drawings from the University College Cork Art Collection.
The inclusion of works from the UCC Art Collection tells the story of 25 years of visual art at University College Cork. The collection has shaped the memories and experiences of students, academics and visitors to the college, as well as contributing to the creative landscape of Cork city and beyond. In 1985, University College Cork began collecting significant works of Irish art, demonstrating a strong commitment to the local artistic community whilst providing a platform for art practices on a national level.
Then + Now offers perspectives on individual artworks and the creative processes that underpin them, asking the question: what defines art practice? Whereas many art practices express a clear sense of continuity and a prolonged engagement with a chosen set of themes and techniques, others show decisive breaks in styles, demonstrating how artists have sought new forms of expression in their work.
Then + Now: Evolving Art Practices includes a number of artworks presented outside of the Glucksman Gallery and distributed throughout the campus. A programme of curatorial tours and educational events encourage audiences to further explore the Art Collection and its place within the academic environment of UCC.
The exhibition will run from July 21st-October 25th 2009. The Lewis Glucksman Gallery is open Tuesday-Saturday, 10am-5pm; Late Night Thursday until 8pm; Sunday 12-5pm.
