The Irish Economic Association Annual Conference
08.05.2009

UCC recently hosted the Irish Economic Association (IEA) Conference. The first time to be hosted by UCC, the conference was the largest in its 24 year history with national as well as international speakers from Europe, the USA and Australia.
More than 80 papers were presented over three days on topics including financial, health, labour and regional economics as well as industrial organisation, trade and econometrics.

The conference organisers were delighted to host keynote speakers, Professor James Heckman, Economics Nobel laureate in 2000, of the University of Chicago and Professor Paul Collier of the University of Oxford. Professor Heckman is noted for his contributions to selection bias and self-selection for which he was awarded the Nobel prize. He is also well-known for his empirical research in labour economics regarding the efficacy of early childhood education programs, which was the subject of his keynote speech to the conference. Professor Collier is a world authority on the political economy of democracy on which he has acted as advisor to the UN and Blair Commission on Africa. Professor Collier addressed the conference on the Political Economy State Failure in Africa.

Pictured with Professor Heckman are Dr Geraldine Ryan, Dr Niall O’Sullivan and Dr Edward Shinnick, the local conference organisation committee based in the Department of Economics, UCC.
