Stem Cells for Heart Attack
12.03.2009

The mechanisms underlying repair post heart attack (myocardial infarction-MI) are still poorly understood and are currently undergoing re-evaluation. In the next lecture of the UCC’s Research Highlights Lecture Series on Friday, March 13th, Professor Noel Caplice will discuss how researchers have recently shown in an experimental model of MI that repair may be greatly augmented by specific secreted factors from progenitor cells.
These factors are the focus of current strategies to alter myocardial remodelling post MI.

Professor Caplice who heads a research team in cardiovascular stem cell biology at the Centre of Vascular Biology at UCC explains: “We use state of the art techniques to evaluate progenitor biology post heart attack including molecular tagging, transcriptional regulation, bone marrow chimeric models. Infarct biology is assessed using immunohistochemistry, biochemical analysis, PV loop display, fluoroscopic angiography and PET-CT with angiography, functional analysis and molecular chemistry.”

Noel Caplice is Professor of Cardiovascular Sciences at UCC and consultant physician/cardiologist at Cork University Hospital (CUH). He currently directs the CRVB at UCC and his research programme is funded by the NIH, Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) - PI grant, and Health Research Board (HRB) - Translational research.

To celebrate 10 years of PRTLI investment in UCC, and to mark its contribution to the development of the University, the region and the nation, the UCC Research Highlights Lecture Series aims to convey to a wide audience the significance and impact of PRTLI investment in UCC.

The Lecture Series will continue until May 7th 2009 and cover a wide range of topics including nanoscience and technology; food & health; cell biology; environment, marine and energy.

The lecture will take place on Friday, March 13th at 1.00pm in the Kane G2, UCC. Admission is free, and as always, members of the public are invited to attend.
