Staff and Students invited to Challenge Stereotypes
29.01.2009

Students and staff of Irish universities are being invited to challenge stereotyping, whether by gender, age, race, religion, sexual orientation, disability etc, by entering a creative competition organised by the Irish University Association’s Equality Network.
This competition has been organised to raise awareness, stimulate debate and emphasise the diversity of the 104,000 staff and students currently in universities in Ireland.

Professor Helen Whelton, Chairperson of the UCC Equality Committee, expressed her support for UCC’s participation in this initiative: “Ninety two nationalities are represented on campus in any given day. In addition, approximately 3,400 mature students and over 400 students with disabilities attend UCC on a regular basis. The potential presented by such a diversity of students is what drives creation and innovation in the university. Stereotyping and prejudice only restricts imagination which in turn limits the resourcefulness of our students. This competition will provide a very valuable vehicle for the illustration of our diversity (both among staff and students) and also educate the wider UCC community on the dangers of stereotyping.”

All students and staff are invited to submit a photograph, painting, poem or short story that challenges stereotypes. The closing date for this competition is Friday, March 20th 2009. Entry forms and the terms and conditions of the competition are available to download from the competition website - http://www.ucc.ie/en/creativecomp09/

A basic photography class has been organised for Wednesday, February 18th 2009 to help those who would like to submit a photographic entry in this competition. Further details are available from Catherine Maguire, UCC Equality & Welfare Officer at c.maguire@ucc.ie

Funding has been provided for this initiative by the Equality Authority competition under the European Year of Equal Opportunities Legacy Fund.
