Science Circus Show comes to UCC!
13.02.2009

The tiered seating, the towering unicycle, the dexterous juggling, the enthralled audience – the circus came to town on Tuesday last, February 10th 2009, albeit it pitched in a Brookfield lecture theatre, rather than the traditional Big Top!
As part of Engineers’ Week 2009, UCC’s College of Science, Engineering and Food Science (in conjunction with Engineers Ireland, Steps to Engineering and Discover Science & Engineering) hosted “The Real Science of the Circus Show”, an engaging demonstration of the scientific principles which underpin some of the staples of circus performance, particularly juggling and balancing acts.

James Soper - a Guinness World Record holder for juggling, and former professional circus performer - captivated the young and not-so-young spectators with his unique show and impressive skills and demonstrated how instrumental scientific forces are to accomplishing these mesmerising feats.

The primary school pupils (750 over 3 sessions) vied to be chosen as volunteers to assist in experiments, while a number of their teachers were also called on to join in the fun.  Den TV’s bumbling Detective Blake, from the Ice Show, successfully negotiated the potentially-hazardous balanced forces ‘experiment’, involving an improvised platform constructed from a canteen tray and string, and an uncapped beaker of crimson water.  James’ show is an admirable compound of Science Education and entertainment, and certainly suggests a highly alternative career option for Science and Engineering students!
